Mom Sues University of Pennsylvania, The Suicide of Amazon During cyanide daughter
The mother of a student at the University of Pennsylvania, who committed suicide in 2013 by swallowing cyanide soluble crystals supposedly bought on Amazon is suing the school and online retailer.Sujata Singh filed suit against Amazon and the University of Pennsylvania in late July, about two and a half years after his 20-year-old daughter, Arya Singh, committed suicide in his bedroom.
The lawsuit alleges that the nursing student was sexually assaulted when she was a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania, and said the school allowed the assailant accused to remain in the same bedroom Singh. The alleged shooter was not punished by the school, according to the lawsuit, which was published on the website of legal news Law360.
Sujata Singh is suing the school for negligence, claiming that teachers and administrators ignore issues that her daughter was experiencing as a result of the alleged sexual assault. The lawsuit says the school was aware of the behavior problems that may result from sexual assault because university administrators received a letter from the Department of Education that these complications is indicated.
The lawsuit also says the school never contacted Singh sister or mother about the problem behavior exposes the student, even though she told numerous campus authorities and counselors about the alleged assault.
Singh also reported the alleged assault at the University of Pennsylvania Police Department and the Philadelphia Police Department investigated the alleged assault and each creates a report, the lawsuit said. Neither police department could immediately confirm the reports were made on Friday.
Singh grades plummeted, he was arrested for alcohol intoxication and was the subject of more than academic research and misconduct, according to the statement. But the suit alleges that "the University employees conduct 'to her was indifferent, hostile and sometimes vindictive."
Singh said the February 8, 2013, he had to leave school in the middle of an investigation of misconduct against him, as the investigation prevented him register for classes, the lawsuit said. Hours later, he committed suicide by swallowing cyanide soluble crystals, according to the lawsuit.
A spokesman for the University of Pennsylvania, Ron Ozio, also declined to comment on pending litigation.
Singh bought the cyanide through a Thai company Amazon in early December, according to the lawsuit. Amazon processes the payment and a portion of the selling price remains, the complaint said.
"Despite having a policy and procedure to prohibit through its offer of websites and sale of prohibited items, illegal and hazardous substances banned in the United States, including but not limited to cyanide products, Amazon did not comply with the policy and procedure, "said the lawsuit.
Amazon began selling prevention cyanide February 2, 2013, but by then it was too late. The lawsuit says that another 51 people have bought the cyanide Singh Amazon before, resulting in the death of 11 buyers "within weeks of sale."
Sujata Singh Amazon sued for negligence and not impede the Thai company, which also appears as a defendant in the lawsuit, the sale of cyanide.
Amazon counsel, Andrew K. Garden, told NBC News that Amazon does not comment on pending litigation.
