Gadget Ogling: Smart Bikes
Welcome to Gadget Dreams and Nightmares, column sifting through the latest announcement gadget for gold nuggets.
Collection of precious metals this week is an adapter that converts a bicycle run-of-the-mill on a smart bike, a new spin on the card singular credit, a combo TV remote speakers and a retractable keyboard.
As always, these are not critical, since I have not even seen any of these elements in the real world. The rating for each product denotes only test it with my interest in the hands of my cynical writer.
Bright Bike
Regular readers will recall previous surveys of my inability to ride a bike. I've never had much interest as a child, but now live in a bike-friendly city tremendously, I have not found a way to learn without feeling like a total fool the public.
However, I am more interested than ever in a life on two wheels after discovering SmartHalo. This is a tool that is permanently connected to one ride and becomes an intelligent vehicle.
The "halo" part of the name refers to the circular screen, which uses color and segmented lights to indicate turn-by-turn instructions. (SmartHalo learn their fate through a paired smartphone app.)
The system includes a night light that turns on and off automatically, and a system of notification for incoming calls and messages and warnings of bad weather. As is apparently required for all devices, it has a fitness tracker too.
Since it is assumed that live permanently on the bike one - save to eliminate recharge occasionally - security is a key factor. SmartHalo appears to be tamper-proof, and has an alarm system to scare off potential thieves. The cherry on the cake? The application can take your bike if you've lost.
There is an impressive range of features crammed into SmartHalo, and for both novice and experienced riders, which could be helpful. The estimated retail price of US $ 149 seems reasonable for what SmartHalo can do. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm about to find local classes for adult bikes.
